Fire codes, prevention the focus of EPFD & Apartment Association meeting

The El Paso Fire Department, along with the El Paso Apartment Association talked about fire prevention and general fire codes.

On July 23, the Community Risk Reduction division of Fire Prevention was given the opportunity to speak during an Education Fast Track session with the El Paso Apartment Association.

During this training session, the Department was given the opportunity to educate 20 apartment managers representing apartment complexes throughout the city at one central location.

According to Lt. James Schaerfl, the topics of discussion were International Fire Code regulations covering grilling safety, proper storage of propane tanks, maintenance and proper marking of fire lanes, general fire safety tips and best practices for tenants during an emergency at their complex.

“Inspector Ray Rodriguez did a great job educating the apartment managers,” Schaerfl said. “He has extensive experience dealing with multi-family dwelling inspections and was able to put it to use during this informational session. We hope to see more compliance with the Fire Code at apartment complexes, making them safer for tenants and reducing the number of emergency responses.”
