Border Patrol Agents snag pot in backpacks, smugglers

Border Patrol Agents from the Clint Station in the Lower Valley detain four smugglers and nearly 400 pounds of pot early Monday morning

According to officials, in the early morning hours of August 31, the agents – using their acquired sign tracking skills – detected the entry of 6 people into the US.  Agents then followed the footprints, which led them to four men and bundles of marijuana.

The agents were able to detain four of the men and recover five burlap sacks containing 375.5 pounds of marijuana, however  two other men were able to run back into Mexico.

Border Patrol officials identify the suspected smugglers as 18-year old Edgar Cruz Zavala, 18-Year old Jesus Reyes Chavez, 49-Year old Refugio Manuel Romero Sanchez, and 22-Year old Manuel Romero Esquivel, all from Mexico.

Officials say they admitted to carrying the backpacks of marijuana across the international border.  All four men, along with the marijuana, were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency in El Paso for further investigation.
