A comfortable El Paso Chihuahuas’ lead turned into a dramatic bottom of the ninth inning Thursday in Memphis, as El Paso held off the surging Redbirds to win 7-5. Memphis entered the bottom of the ninth down 7-2 before scoring three times and loading the bases to put the winning run on base.
Frank Garces came in to get the final two outs and his third Triple-A save of the season.
Casey McElroy led off and led the way for El Paso, striking four hits and bringing in an RBI. Alex Dickerson did not make any outs on Thursday, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a hit by pitch. Rymer Liriano went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in the win.
Chihuahuas scored a run in the first inning for the third consecutive game. The Chihuahuas now lead Las Vegas by half a game. It is the first time the Chihuahuas have been in a first place tie or first place by themselves since May 2.
