A six-run top of the second inning guided the El Paso Chihuahuas to a 9-3 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Saturday night. The Chihuahuas finished their eight-game Tennessee road trip 7-1 and have taken three consecutive series.
The Chihuahuas trail Las Vegas by a half game in the PCL’s Southern Division.
The six-run rally included six hits, including an RBI single by pitcher Jason Lane, one Memphis error and 10 batters. The Redbirds cut the lead in half with a three-run third and the 6-3 score held until the sixth, when Hunter Renfroe hit a three-run home run in front of dozens of family and friends traveling up from Mississippi.
Casey McElroy and Hector Gomez reached base four times each for El Paso. Dale Thayer, Caleb Thielbar and Jay Jackson all tossed scoreless outings out of El Paso’s bullpen, the second straight night multiple relievers had scoreless appearances for the Chihuahuas. The Chihuahuas have won 10 of their last 12 games.
Sunday begins the final home series of the regular season at Southwest University Park.
