NMSU’s Murphy snags WAC Player of the Week

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State volleyball middle blocker Gwen Murphy is the first Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week recipient for the 2015 season, the conference announced on Monday.

Murphy, a senior from Elfrida, Ariz., picks up her first-ever WAC Player of the Week nod.  It is also the first volleyball player of the week honor for the Aggies since Desiree Scott brought home a couple in 2013.

“Gwen was fantastic, she works hard and it is paying off,” NM State head coach Mike Jordansaid. “Her performance this past weekend has to be one of the best ever here at NM State.”

Murphy led the Aggies to a 3-1 record at the Falcon Classic last weekend, with the only loss coming at the hands of No. 16 Arizona State in a thrilling five-set match.

She tallied 57 kills, nine blocks, seven digs and six service aces en route to all-tournament team honors. She posted a WAC-best .478 hitting percentage and averaged 3.80 kills, 0.60 blocks, 0.47 digs and 0.40 service aces per set.

Murphy had the match high in kills in all four matches, with a career-high 16 kills in back-to-back matches, including versus the Sun Devils. She also had a career-high three service aces in the season opener against Northeastern and hit an astounding .722 versus Montana, the third-highest hitting percentage in a match of her career.

Murphy and the NM State squad now prepare to head to College Station, Texas, to participate in the Texas A&M Invitational.  The Aggies meet Wichita State on Friday, Abilene Christian on Saturday and host Texas A&M on Sunday.
