Chihuahuas, Whataburger Team Up for Annual Food Drive at Southwest University Park

The El Paso Chihuahuas are teaming up with Whataburger to host the Third Annual Food Drive at Southwest University Park.

The drive will take place Friday, May 19ththrough Monday, May 22nd when the Chihuahuas host the Oklahoma City Dodgers (Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate). The drive will benefit the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank.

Fans are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items as they enter through the gates of Southwest University Park during the home series.

Chihuahuas fans who donate three (3) or more canned goods, non-perishable food items, or a minimum monetary contribution of $1, Whataburger will give each donor one (1) coupon good for a free Whataburger, while supplies last. Every $1 donation produces up to 10 meals.

“It is a privilege to team up with Whataburger and Chihuahuas fans to help the El Pasoans Fight Hunger Food Bank where we all can make a significant positive impact on our community,” said Vice President and General Manager Brad Taylor.

Food collection will take place at the Santa Fe Gate entrance one hour before each game during the series. Fans are asked to donate canned vegetables and fruits, soups, high protein items such as tuna and peanut butter, boxed pastas and cereals, and staples such as packaged rice and beans.

Fans may also make monetary donations.

The Chihuahuas and Whataburger exceeded their 2016 goal, collecting more than 10,000 meals to feed local homeless, including 397 pounds of food equaling 330 meals. The Chihuahuas are looking to meet or exceed the 2017 goal of 10,000 meal donations during the drive.

“Whataburger is looking forward to working with the El Paso Chihuahuas to fight hunger in our city,” said Whataburger Director of Operations Henry Apodaca. “When our neighbors are in need, it’s important to treat them like family and do what we can to help. Thanks to the generous support of Chihuahua fans and loyal Whataburger customers, we’re grateful for the opportunity to serve the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank.”

In addition to the food drive, the Chihuahuas Volunteer Pack presented by Helen of Troy will be volunteering at the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank headquarters on Saturday, May 20th from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.

The drive will take place beginning today, Thursday, May 19th through Sunday, May 22nd when the Chihuahuas take on the Round Rock Express (Texas Rangers).
