After the conclusion of the NCAA Indoor Championships, the UTEP men’s track and field and cross country program ranks 18th in the country in the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Program of the Year standings.
The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institution that has achieved the most success each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Championships.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient.
The Miners rank 18th in this year’s standings so far due to an 11th-place showing at the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championships and a 51st-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The men will have at least two good candidates to score for the program at the outdoor championships with javelin thrower Rasmus Maukonen (2015 All American honorable mention/20th place at Nationals) and freshman Jonah Koech (mid-distance runner/two-time All American).
The outdoor season will begin next Saturday (March 26th) at Kidd Field as UTEP will host the UTEP Springtime.
