UTEP Ranked Among Safest Colleges in U.S.

The University of Texas at El Paso has been listed among the Top 100 Safest Colleges in America 2017 by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

UTEP was ranked No. 31 out of more than 2,000 colleges and universities in the country.

“We are honored that the National Council for Home Safety and Security has recognized UTEP for its campus safety,” said UTEP Police Chief Cliff Walsh. “The UTEP Police Department works in collaboration with University staff and community law enforcement agencies to ensure a safe campus environment for all of our students, faculty, staff and visitors. We are successful because of those partnerships.”

The ranking was determined using the most recent data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the National Center for Education Statistics. The top colleges had low overall crime rates and maintain safe campuses with little or no crime.

The data was pulled from 2,167 accredited public, private or nonprofit institutions that offer four-year programs and have a student population above 15,000.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security is a national trade association comprised of licensed alarm installers, contractors and other relevant trade groups across the United States. Their stated goal is to further industry education and public knowledge about home safety and security.
