UTEP’s MaST Academy Recognizes ADP’s Commitment to Science and Math Education

The Math and Science Teachers (MaST) Academy in The University of Texas at El Paso’s College of Science is recognizing the long-standing commitment from Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP).

ADP’s most recent donation of $175,000 brings its total support of the MaST Academy to $2,175,000 over a 10-year period. In recognition of ADP’s ongoing and sustained support to the academy and the students it serves, the academy is being renamed the ADP Math and Science Teachers Academy at The University of Texas at El Paso.

“ADP’s support of the MaST Academy has been instrumental in our continuing efforts to produce well prepared and dedicated math and science teachers for our local high schools,” said UTEP College of Science Dean Robert Kirken, Ph.D. “In this way, we are able to improve the overall levels of education in our region, strengthening high schoolers’ preparation for college while serving the undergraduates who will become future teachers through financial support, mentoring, professional development and field experiences. Our relationship with ADP is a highly valued one, and we look forward to continuing our shared efforts and creating new possibilities.”

The MaST Academy program was established in 2007 to enhance the scope and quality of secondary mathematics and science teachers who graduate from UTEP to serve the El Paso region.

As of September 2016, 102 MaST Academy alumni are actively teaching mathematics or sciences to middle and high school students. The academy provides College of Science undergraduates with annual scholarships, weekly field experience with a MaST mentor teacher in a math or science classroom, monthly professional development seminars, opportunities to participate in summer outreach with area high school freshmen, travel to local and state conferences, and more.

“The ADP Foundation’s support for the MaST Academy is fundamentally an investment in the future,” Vice President and General Manager of ADP’s El Paso Solution Center Terry McGreehan said. “Math and science feed the most curious among us. We believe that new thoughts, ideas, products and services come from innovative people, not just companies. These are the people that will shape the future with new ways to do things, and new products that can’t be imagined today.”

ADP is one of the world’s largest payroll and comprehensive human resources outsourcing service providers. In 2006, the company established its El Paso Solution Center after a nationwide location search. It employs nearly 1,900 people in the region.
