11 Socorro ISD art students advance to 2021 VASE state competition

Socorro Independent School District officials announced this week that 11 art students won top honors and advanced to the state competition in the high school Visual Arts Scholastic Event for their creative and innovative artwork.

The annual VASE competition recognizes exemplary student achievement in visual arts and provides the artists a high standard of excellence to work toward. The students’ artwork included a variety of media from sculptures to two-dimensional work.

“As always, we are super proud of our winners,” said Candace Printz, SISD assistant director of Fine Arts. “Because of this pandemic, I didn’t think we would be able to do a whole lot for our students but thankfully Fine Arts has made it possible for them.”

Traditionally, the students travel to San Marcos for the state VASE competition, but due to the ongoing pandemic the contest is continuing via an online format and judging will be based on their artwork, references, and their written statements about their creative process.

Angelica Soto, a junior at Pebble Hills High School, said this is her third year in a row advancing to the VASE state competition.

“It’s really exciting to be able to enter an art piece to state again,” Soto said. “Art is my passion and I wish I can make it my life in the future.”

El Dorado High School art teacher Virginia Castaneda had two of her students advance to state this year. She said both of them never cease to impress her.

“I am super proud of both of them,” Castaneda said. “They did this on their own because of their ambitious attitude, especially in art.”

The students’ art pieces will be judged at the state VASE competition in late April.
