12th Annual Sun City Dance Classic to include Tribute to Victims of August 3rd Shooting

Over 400 dancers will take over the El Paso County Coliseum as they participate in the 12th annual Sun City Dance Classic Dance Competition.

“I am in awe of the talent we see in our competition every year! The production staff and I always try to make each year better than the last,” said SCDC founder and director Monica Perez. “This year we knew we wanted to do something special for the Borderland community  after what happened on August 3rd. I’m blessed and grateful to be able to have this platform to showcase the incredible talent we have across the El Paso, Juárez, and the Las Cruces region.”

This year, to honor the victims of the tragic events on August 3rd, 2019, judge Ruben Provencio choreographed a piece for the victims that judges, directors, and instructors will be performing on Sunday, March 1st to open the Grand Champion Showcase.

This year’s SCDC features 18 dance categories, including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, ballroom, tap, contemporary and a variety of other styles, along with three age divisions – junior (5-12), senior (13-18) and adult (19 and above) and six dance divisions – solos, duets, trios, small groups, large groups, and production groups.

To judge this year’s competition, the SCDC production team is proud to have brought in four incredible dance professionals. These judges have danced at the NBA All-Star Weekend, in music videos, and have performed with some of the best dance companies in the nation.

“The Sun City Dance Classic has been showcasing the area’s best dancers for over 10 years,” SCDC officials shared. “…and as this competition continues to grow, hundreds of dancers across the Southwest come to the Sun City to show their talents and compete for the
title of Grand Champion, a cash award, as well as a highly sought-after championship banner and trophy.”

Trophies will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners.  The annual competition is scheduled to run from Friday, February 28 to Sunday, March 1 at the El Paso County Coliseum located at 4100 East Paisano.
