The City of El Paso Department of Public Health confirms that the number of flu-related deaths in El Paso has climbed to 18 with a small child being one of the latest victims of the virus.
A woman in her 40s is the first flu-related death involving an individual without underlying medical conditions.
Additionally, a boy under the age of five also died and was listed with only one medical condition; and a woman in her 60’s – who had underlying medical conditions – has become the 18 flu-related death in El Paso this season.
Public Health officials continue to urge medical providers to test for the flu and to prescribe antivirals when possible. They also encourage El Paso residents to be vaccinated and to practice the “4 C’s.”
- CLEAN – Wash your hands often. Scrub hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
- COVER – Cover your cough. Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Don’t have a tissue? The crook of your elbow will do.
- CONTAIN – Contain germs by steering clear of others who are sick. If you’re sick, stay home until you’re well.
- CALL – Call or see a doctor if you or your child has a fever greater than 100 degrees.
