51’s Capture Lead Early, Down Chihuahuas 6 to 3

The Las Vegas 51s’ four-run fourth inning led them to a 6-3 win over the El Paso Chihuahuas Monday night at Southwest University Park.

The loss, combined with second place Albuquerque’s win in Salt Lake, holds El Paso’s magic number at four with seven regular season games remaining.

Brandon Nimmo hit the second pitch of the game over the fence, the second leadoff home run against El Paso pitching in the last two Chihuahuas’ home games, with Salt Lake’s Rafael Ortega doing the same thingon Tuesday.

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, El Paso scored twice on RBI hits by Carlos Asuaje and Hunter Renfroe, who collected two RBIs Monday, bringing his season total to 101. Renfroe is the first player in Chihuahuas’ history with a triple-digit RBI total.

The Chihuahuas brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings but did not score. El Paso is now 6-7 versus Las Vegas this season. Asuaje went 3-for-4 with an RBI and now has 165 hits to lead the Pacific Coast League.
