Kohlberg ES students donate toys for holiday season

The students and community members at Kohlberg Elementary School came together recently to play Santa Claus for hundreds of El Paso area children who may have gone without a present this holiday season.

Through the Kohlberg Kids Love initiative, the school and students gathered more than 300 new toys in just under a month to help give families with scarce resources a chance of having a joyous time during the holidays.

Toys were collected from students and their families, but the generosity spilled over the community as many neighbors and non-parents showing up to the school to donate a toy or two.

Organizers from Kohlberg said the toy drive gave students the opportunity to learn about community service and the importance of volunteering and helping others.

To help Kohlberg help those children in need of a toy, the school enlisted the help of the El Paso Motorcycle Coalition, an organization of motorcycle enthusiasts who perform philanthropic work. The coalition rode their bikes into Kohlberg before the Thanksgiving Break to pick up the toys and then deliver them to children who need them.

The Toy Run, as the pick-up event was called, turned into a big celebration that included parents, bikers and even a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

“This is the fourth year that this event takes place and it seems to be getting bigger and better,” said Kohlberg Elementary Principal Michelle Pringle. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to pay it forward and really make a difference in our community.”
