Bianca’s Borderland Beat: Battle of the Bands tonight

Across the road from the Black Market/Mesa Street Grill/Moontime Pizza graves donning the fluorescent CVS headstone stands the neon red arrow pointing to the entrance of the Lowbrow Palace.

Endless names in musical royalty have graced the stage for years, and alongside an impressive concert calendar for 2016, organizers Splendid Sun Productions recognize the local talent long brewing in El Paso.

The annual Battle of the Bands comes to a close this week at The Lowbrow, and locals can get a taste of El Paso’s musical buffet in the final elimination round on January 8.

The last standing survivors get more than applause and a glorified grapevine among the local scenesters. Thanks to support from the world-renowned Sonic Ranch Recording Studios, winners get a stab at a professional session at the studio complex hidden in the pecan orchards of Tornillo, Texas with a healthy stack of $1,000 in prize money.

The last round makes for quite the melting pot of genres ranging from reggae to hip hop, and some pinches of indie rock and electro.

It’s a free concert with 11 solid bands. And decent beer selections. And plenty of cool kids on a Friday. Starts at 8.

I'm a writer at heart. Though my soul delves in various crafts including but not limited to photography, event planning, marketing, sloppy two-stepping, crowdsurfing at good shows, saving animals (sometimes people) and pretending to be the Chopped champ every night in my kitchen. My career sense is gracefully schizophrenic, having jumped from working under the wing of a neurosurgeon (quickly learning the stomach couldn't handle bloody brains too well) broadcast television, marketing, retail advertising, event planning and concert booking. I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. But I'm a writer at heart.
