The Texas University Interscholastic League announced Monday the realignment of districts for high school football and basketball. The UIL undertakes realignment every two years.
While there were no big surprises in the redistricting, there are some changes to note. In 3A football, Tornillo now gets a somewhat more friendly travel schedule, but cross-county school Anthony continues to take lengthy road trips while competing in 2A.
In 6-man football, area 1A schools Dell City and Sierra Blanca also make long-haul trips east to compete.
4A is again a Cotton Valley League, save for the trip east to Andrews. Over in 5A and 6A, the schedules remain the same – save for Canutillo moving from 1-5A to 2-5A and the addition of Pebble Hills High as the area’s newest 6A school.
According to Monday’s release, schools may play their first game no earlier than August 25, 2016. A proposal passed by the Legislative Council in October 2013 allows sub-varsity football teams in Conferences 5A and 6A to play on Wednesday during week 1 (previously termed zero-week) only if the varsity team plays on Thursday of that same week.
The first playing dates for football for the 2016-17 season are August 25-27 and schools are limited to no more than ten games. Regional teams have been in italics

If a district is unhappy with their placement, the UIL has an appeals process; according to the UIL’s release: A participant school may request an appeal of the district assignment by filing its request and a supporting statement with the District Assignment Appeals Committee and informing, in writing, the superintendent and principal of the schools in the conference and district to which it was assigned and notifying the superintendent and principal of the schools in the conference and district to which it wishes to be assigned. Notification must go to all schools that could be involved in the change. This appeal must be made by February 11, 2016. The meeting at which appeals will be heard is scheduled for February 18, 2016.
