Aggies hold first scrimmage, Coach Martin talks about ‘positive signs’

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After 10 days of practice, the NM State football team held its first scrimmage of the 2015 season on Saturday in Aggie Memorial Stadium.

Officials refereed the closed scrimmage, which consisted of open field and red zone drills. Below are comments from head coach Doug Martin on the progress of the team thus far.

On overall thoughts from camp…
I think we are making progress. We’re not where we need to be. We’ve got a lot of work to do. I thought we were more physical today than we have been. The offense did a great job of taking care of the football, which is key for us. We almost led the nation in turnovers last year. Our defense played better against the run today, so those are all positive signs for us.

On the offense…
Offensively, we’ve got playmakers now. We have wide receivers and a quarterback and running back who can all make plays, so if we get those guys the ball, we have a chance to make a lot of explosion plays. I just need to see a little bit more consistency from the offense first, running the ball.

On the defense…
Defensively, consistency and stopping the run is the key for us.

On QB Tyler Rogers
I think he’s made exceptional progress as quarterback. He’s learning how to manage the game and play down and distance and not turn the ball over. Again, that was huge today, because I don’t think we had a scrimmage last year where we didn’t turn the football over, so that’s going to help us win football games. And he’s making big plays. He’s making some big throws and he’s capable of creating explosion plays for us.

On the freshman…
We’re a really young football team, obviously, but there are some freshmen who are standing out. DeMarcus Owens, on defense, I think is going to be exceptional at corner, Javahn Fergurson at linebacker and Jassavia Reese at defensive end. Those three in particular on defense are outstanding. The one guy that probably gets overlooked is the freshman placekicker (Parker Davidson). He’s really good and that puts points on the scoreboard. I’m really pleased with him. And then OJ Clark on offense, I think, is the freshman that you see that’s really explosive on that side of the ball.
