Alamo Drafthouse celebrates the 40th anniversary of the best year in cinema throug
What was the best year in cinema history? With movies like STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, ROCKY III, CONAN THE BARBARIAN and THE NEVERENDING STORY, it’s clearly 1982. Right? It may have been forty years ago (!!!), but we’re still living in the films of 1982.
That’s why Alamo Drafthouse East El Paso and Montecillo are celebrating the most spectacular year of cinema ever with a month-long deep-dive retrospective of the epic, genre-defining films of 1982 – including Brunch Screenings, Movie Parties and Kids Camp movies. See listings below for more all-timers and hidden gems from the greatest year of cinema.
Alamo Drafthouse also has plenty of new summer spectaculars on tap. In August, ATOMIC BLONDE and DEADPOOL 2 director David Leitch brings his latest action-comedy BULLET TRAIN, starring Brad Pitt, to the big screen. Seasoned assassin Ladybug (Pitt) is looking to leave the life but gets roped into a seemingly easy snatch and dash job on a Japanese bullet train. Things get a little more complicated as competing assassins crawl out of the woodwork and the notoriously unlucky Ladybug does everything he can to just get off the damn train. Check out an advance screening on Tuesday, August 2 at Alamo Drafthouse East El Paso.
Also coming in August are DRAGON BALL SUPER: SUPER HERO and director Halina Reijn’s new dark comedy-horror BODIES BODIES BODIES.
Frida Fest
Join us at Alamo Drafthouse East El Paso as we partner with the El Paso Opera to celebrate the life and art of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo on Saturday, August 13 beginning at 1:30 p.m. This colorful event features performances by El Paso Opera resident artists, a pop-up market with Frida-inspired art, a FRIDA screening with a Q&A and a look-alike contest. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982)
Alamo Drafthouse Montecillo
Tuesday, August 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Alamo Drafthouse East El Paso
Wednesday, August 3 at 7:30 p.m.
It is 1980. Disappointed with the performance of the decidedly un-STAR WARS-like performance of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Paramount executives approach television producer Harve Bennett about taking over the next outing of the Starship Enterprise… but for a far lower budget than the prior film and its special effects extravaganza. An epic revenge tale that also manages to pack in meditations on aging, regret, and, well, how we deal with death… it’s the finest moment in the entire Original Series canon, and (arguably) one of the greatest science-fiction films ever made.

Hot off his success from ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, horror movie icon John Carpenter next drew inspiration from Howard Hawks’ classic sci-fi thriller THE THING, resulting in one of the most thrilling and beloved blockbusters of the ’80s. Kurt Russell leads a group of men working in Antarctica who are plagued by an alien being that can take the form of any living creature… including the men themselves. Leveraging special effects from ROBOCOP mastermind Rob Bottin that still shock to this day, Carpenter crafted a film that combines body horror, Hitchcockian suspense thriller, and rollicking action movie into one wildly entertaining package.

BODIES BODIES BODIES
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema East El Paso & Montecillo
Opens Thursday, August 11
Director Halina Reijn’s darkly comedic horror whodunit has all the right pieces on the board for a classic slasher flick. An isolated location cut off from the outside world. 20-somethings partying their faces off with plenty of illicit substances. These tropes might be familiar, but they’re deployed in ways that feel fresh and unexpected. The set up is simple: a group of old friends and a couple newcomers meet at a mansion for a hurricane party. As old tensions and levels of intoxication rise, they decide to play a game – Bodies Bodies Bodies. It’s all fun and games (aside from how toxic they act towards each other) until an actual body is found, transforming the night into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

John Carpenter and Debra Hill never intended for their film HALLOWEEN to become a franchise. When the slasher to end all slashers became a runaway hit, though, the two were tasked with figuring out a way to keep the sequels chugging along. Michael Myers would, of course, return for HALLOWEEN II but it was the third film – HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH – that gave the filmmakers a chance to do what they deeply wanted to do with the franchise: turn it into an anthology series of unconnected scary movies themed around the spooky holiday.

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum,” warns L.A. drifter John Nada (wrestling superstar Rowdy Roddy Piper) after discovering a plot to enslave the American masses. Special glasses show him subliminal messages (“Submit!”) that reptilian aliens (disguised as Gordon Gekko-esque yuppies) are transmitting through TV, magazines, billboards and movies. It’s up to Nada and friend Frank (Keith David) to expose the conspiracy—but not before one of cinema’s longest, greatest fight scenes—in Carpenter’s still-prescient sci-fi satire.
