180+ Soccer Teams Set to Play in Annual Sun Bowl International Soccer Tournament

The Sun Bowl Association reached its max capacity for the number of youth soccer teams participating in the 2017 annual Academy Sports + Outdoors Sun Bowl International Soccer Tournament.

After receiving a large number of sign-ups, the association had to create a limit after more teams signed up than anticipated. There are more than 180 teams signed up to compete.

“Teams and the community appreciate this tournament,” said Joe Daubach, the Special Events Director for the Sun Bowl Association. “It’s exciting to challenge all of our volunteers able to take this tournament to the next level year after year. We strive to promote El Paso, while encouraging visitors to stay in stay in hotels and eat in local restaurants. Teams leave with a great outlook about El Paso.”

The Academy Sports + Outdoors Sun Bowl International Soccer Tournament brings together soccer teams from El Paso and surrounding areas to compete together in friendly competition. The Tournament is open to boys and girls that range from U6 to U19.

“Our job is to put on quality events for the city, and this is just another of the many events the Association puts on for the community,” said Bernie Olivas, Executive Director of the Sun Bowl Association. “We are a non-profit organization and we’re not in this to really make money, but to put on a great event for the community. Our goal is to make each event better and better and this tournament has grown from humble beginnings of 48 teams to the present number of over 180 teams. We strive to improve it and hope to see it grow even more.”

The Sun Bowl Association is committed to display the way and quality of life in the southwest through various events throughout the year, such as the Sun Bowl game, The Helen of Troy Sun Court Charm Camp, and the Academy Sports + Outdoors Sun Bowl International Soccer Tournament.
