Some downtown El Paso streets are expected to change to their final configurations by the end of June as the Border West Expressway nears completion.
The $680 million project, which completes Loop 375, is located west of downtown El Paso, south of I-10 and extends approximately 7.4 miles, from Racetrack Drive at Doniphan Road eastward to one mile east of Park Street, near US-54.
Drivers and pedestrians can expect to find different access to Loop 375/Border Highway, with several streets closing and others changing from one-way to two-way streets.
Permanent changes include the following:
- Campbell will become a two-way street from 7th to Border Highway with access in from, and out to the westbound lanes of Border Highway.
- Kansas will become a two-way street from 7th to Border Highway.
- Kansas, Santa Fe, and Mesa will permanently close at Border Highway.
- Oregon will remain an “in” only.
The recently opened Paisano Interchange at Coles allows drivers to use newly constructed direct connector ramps (opened to traffic last year) to access the Border Highway to and from east of downtown.
Other completed sections on the project include the following: a new McNutt exit, improvements on St. Vrain and Paisano; a new bridge over railroad tracks and the Mesa Drain on Delta; ramps from Paisano to Sunland Park; the continuation of Doniphan from Racetrack to Paisano, with an improved Doniphan/Racetrack intersection; and the repaving/reconstruction of the southernmost two blocks of S. Mesa, Oregon, Kansas, and Campbell.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of summer 2019 and includes a mile-long bridge that runs along the US Mexico border and straddles the border fence.
With the completion of this project, Loop 375 becomes a continuous high-speed roadway with limited access, necessary for safety. The Border West Expressway will be the city’s only tolled roadway.
