Azul Barrientos Kicks Off Free Musical Performances at El Paso Museum of Art

Starting Friday, February 8, the El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) invites the public to enjoy free musical performances starting at noon at the museum’s auditorium.

Mexico City musician Azul Barrientos, percussionist Nina Rodriguez, and harp player, Juan Cabrera, will perform live for an intimate curated performance on the exhibition Power and Piety: Spanish Colonial Art that’s on view from February 8 to May 5.

Azul Barrientos will bring her diverse influence of Latin American music and her cultural roots to EPMA audiences. Born into a musical family in Mexico City, Azul was introduced to Latin American folk songs at an early age.

Since then, she has performed internationally in Spain, France, England, and Scotland. Notably, Azul has performed for the King and Queen of Spain and alongside starts such as Lila Downs and Susana Baca.

Audiences will discover Azul’s passion in reviving lost cultural traditions and uncovering unique histories through her songs.

Azul will share the stage with Nina Rodriguez, a Grammy-winning percussionist and educator. Performing together since 2012, Nina has brought her extraordinary energy and dedication to the power of drumming to the stage.

Complimenting Azul’s jarana and guitar and Nina’s drums, Argentinian born, Paraguayan raised, harp player Juan Cabrera will add to the experience. Having recorded two albums and as a current member of Mariachi Campanas de America, Juan sounds of the Paraguayan harp to the mariachi ensemble.

Azul’s recent album, Nuestro Corazón, celebrates Latin America with a beautiful rendition of Spanish, Indigenous, and African rhythms and will also be available for purchase at the EPMA Store.
