UTEP’s Raven Bennett was named the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. The freshman earned her first award of her young career and the first honor for first-year head coach Roberto Aspillaga.
“Raven is very coachable and is a natural competitor,” Aspillaga said. “This recognition is only one of the many to come. Not only is she taking care of business on the court, but in the classroom as well. Her 3.8 GPA proves she is also a great student. I am extremely excited for her growth potential.”
Bennett won three of her four matches over the weekend. She helped UTEP to a victory over Central Oklahoma on Saturday and a hard fight versus Pac-12 opponent, Colorado.
The freshman started the weekend with wins over Central Oklahoma’s Shali Schoepflin, 6-4, 6-2, at singles and partnered up with Matilda Tench to top Alli Hodges and Anya Minakova, 6-2. Her strong efforts aided the team to post a 6-1 victory over the Bronchos.
The Mesquite, Texas native followed that performance with another singles win over Colorado’s Kyra Wojcik, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. On the season, Bennett is undefeated (4-0) in singles play and 3-1 in doubles competition while helping the Miners to a 3-1 start.
It has been 10 years since UTEP received its last C-USA Athlete of the Week honor. Teri Wilkerson was named Co-Athlete of the Week by the league on Jan. 31, 2006, as she shared her award with Houston’s Loli Gomez.
The last Miner to receive the Athlete of the Week honor alone was Weronika Bloczynska on Feb. 15, 2005 when UTEP was still a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
UTEP women’s tennis continues on the road this week as the team gets ready to face No. 64 Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. on Thursday at 1 p.m. (MT) and No. 27 Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday at 1 p.m. (MT).
