Burglar surprised by homeowner, caught by police

A doorbell-ringing would-be burglar was surprised when the home he broke into was still occupied by the homeowner.

On Wednesday afternoon, officers out of the Westside Regional Command responded to a call of a burglary in progress along the 600 block of Vera. According to officers, the homeowner peeked out his front door after hearing the door bell ringing. The unnamed homeowner said he ignored the doorbell, hoping the person would go away.

However a short time later, the homeowner found the man standing in his kitchen, after he broke into the home through the garage door. Police say 45- year old David Ward was just as surprised to find someone home and ran out through the rear sliding door,  followed by the homeowner who called police.

Patrol and TAC officers responded and Ward was spotted several blocks away, where he was arrested.

Ward was arrested and taken to the El Paso County Detention Facility, where he’s being held under a $75,000 bond.
