UTEP – C-USA Announces Carolyne Chepkosgei and Juan Olmos to All-Academic Team

UTEP track and field student-athletes Carolyne Chepkosgei and Juan Olmos were recognized for their classroom accomplishments as the 2022 Conference USA All-Academic team was announced by league officials on Wednesday.

Chepkosgei has maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA while working towards her Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering. The senior was recognized as a 2022 C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medalist, and was on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the fifth consecutive academic year.

On the track, the product of Kitale, Kenya, recently silvered twice at the C-USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in San Antonio, Texas. She also captured a pair of silver medals at the indoor championships in the mile and 800 in Birmingham, Ala., in February.

Chepkosgei clocked in a 2:07.08 in the 800-meter race, and posted a 4:23.02 in the 1500 on the final day of the championships on May 16. Chepkosgei ran a PR (2:06.11) in the 800 and hit her best time (4:23.00) in the 1500 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on May 13-15. She also took second in the 800 at the Desert Heat Classic (2:07.71) on April 30. During the indoor championships on Feb. 20, Chepkosgei recorded a 2:09.13 in the 800 for a second-place showing, and a 4:52.52 in the mile to win silver.

Olmos, a sophomore transfer from the University of Houston, has worked towards a perfect 4.00 in Kinesiology. The native of El Paso and graduate of Eastwood High School was recognized as a 2022 C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medalist, while also earning a spot on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Olmos most recently competed at the 2022 C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and clocked in a personal-best 14:59.51 in the 5000-meter run. He also competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the championships. At the C-USA Indoor Championships, Olmos earned a bronze medal with the distance medley relay team.

During the regular season, he posted a PR in the 3000m steeplechase (9:26.42) at the Desert Heat Classic on April 30. Olmos clocked in an PR 8:27.04 in the 3000, placing fifth at the Sun Angel Classic Invitational. At the Don Kirby Open & Elite, he recorded a PR 4:19.94 in the mile.
