C-USA honors UTEP’s Bright, Chepkosgei and Koncos Athletes of the Week

DALLAS – For the second time this season a trio of UTEP track and field student-athletes were named the Conference USA Indoor Athletes of the Week presented by Top of the World as announced by the league Tuesday afternoon.

The UTEP ladies swept the weekly honors as sophomore Chantoba Bright was name the female field athlete of the week and Carolyn Chepkosgei the female track athlete of the week. Redshirt junior Karol Koncos was named the men’s field athlete of the week.

Bright leaped out to a personal-best 13.28m mark in the women’s triple jump and placing second at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational hosted by New Mexico. The Wismar Linden, Guyana, product posted the no. 1 mark in C-USA and 14th best nationally.

For Bright, it’s her second honor in as many weeks in the triple jump.

Overall, it’s third indoor athlete of the week honor this season and fourth of her career. Bright earned her first of the season on Jan. 28 after winning the long jump at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational. She earned her second of the season on Feb. 23 after winning her first career triple jump event at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.

Chepkosgei posted a 2:07.16 in the women’s 800m at the Iowa State Classic, clocking in the no. 1 time in C-USA and 35th nationally. It’s the first athlete of the week honor for the Kitale, Kenya, product.

Koncos posted a personal-best 20.56m toss in the men’s weight throw and placed first at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. The Vidina, Slovakia, product recorded the no. 1 throw in C-USA and 35th best nationally this past weekend. For Koncos, it’s his second athlete of the week honor of the season and during his career. He first earned his first weekly honor on Jan. 28 after stellar performance at the MKL Invite.

Bright, Chepkosgei, Koncos and the Miners will travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to compete at the C-USA Indoor Championships on February 22-23.
