Bill Childress Elementary School (BCE) Teacher of the Year Sabina Lazos and Canutillo High School (CHS) Teacher of the Year Christopher Kapuscik
On Friday, the Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) community revealed their selections for the top educators of the year.
Bill Childress Elementary School (BCE) Teacher of the Year Sabina Lazos was selected as the CISD Elementary Teacher of the Year. Lazos teaches third-grade dual-English components. She has been at BCE for three years.
Lazos is a former BCE student and later graduated as the 2011 Canutillo High School valedictorian. She continued her education at The University of Texas at Austin earning a bachelor’s degree in Applied Learning and Development with a focus on Early Childhood through sixth grade.
Canutillo High School (CHS) Teacher of the Year Christopher Kapuscik was selected as the CISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. Kapuscik has been at CHS for nine years and teaches ninth-grade AP Human Geography.
Kapuscik was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from The University of Texas at El Paso. He believes teaching is not just about the content but really getting to know your students and developing positive intentional relationships.
“This year has been exceptionally tough on our teachers. We can’t thank them enough for their dedication to teaching our students through all the challenges of COVID-19,” said CISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz.
“Our teachers have inspired us with their exceptional dedication to supporting and delivering a high-quality education. Mr. Kapuscik and Ms. Lazos are remarkable teachers, beloved by students and held in high esteem by their peers.”
Lazos and Kapuscik will represent CISD in the Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year Contest for Region 19 later this summer. If they’re successful there, they could represent the El Paso region in the Texas Teacher of the Year contest.
