Saturday afternoon, officials with Cathedral High School announced the passing of Mr. Gerardo “Gerald” Gamez, Assistant Principal of Cathedral High School.
According to officials, the 55-year-old Gamez died Saturday morning from complications due to the novel Coronavirus.
“We are in absolute shock at the loss to our Cathedral High School community,” Mr. Adolfo Sanchez, Principal of Cathedral High School said. “Mr. Gamez was beloved member, not only of our Cathedral community, but of the greater educational community in El Paso,” he added.
Principal Sanchez expressed his admiration of Mr. Gamez’s love for his students and his overall demeanor which made him a beloved member of the Cathedral Community.
“He is what the definition of what a nice guy is,” Sanchez said. “He loved being an active participant in the success of our student’s educational experience,” he added. “He was a very devout Catholic and had immense faith in the Catholic Church.”
Prior to Mr. Gamez’s two years as Cathedral High School’s Assistant Principal, Mr. Gamez retired from the Ysleta Independent School District where he served as an Assistant Principal at Del Valle and Eastwood High School. Previous to his role as Assistant Principal he served as a counselor in San Elizario ISD, El Paso ISD and at Hanks High School in Ysleta ISD.
A 27-year veteran of Public Schools in the El Paso Community and current assistant principal of Cathedral, Gamez was diagnosed with COVID-19 while on bereavement leave in early January.
School officials add that they believe that Mr. Gamez contracted the virus while on leave from Cathedral High School.
Gamez is survived by his wife, three children and one grandchild.
