Join the El Paso Opera and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema East El Paso as they celebrate the life and art of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Frida Fest features performances by resident artists from El Paso Opera, a pop-up market with Frida-inspired art, a lookalike contest and a screening of FRIDA, starring Salma Hayek as the world-renowned artist and feminist icon.
Frida Fest takes place Saturday, August 13, 2020, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the lobby of Alamo Drafthouse East El Paso. For information, go to fb.me/e/2fXZocvXs.
Kicking off the celebration is a special pop-up performance by resident artists from the El Paso Opera in the lobby. The El Paso Opera will perform “Frida,” an opera by Robert Xavier Rodríguez on August 27 at the Abraham Chavez Theatre. While you enjoy the pop-up, you can browse and purchase Frida-inspired art and crafts from local artists throughout the lobby and bar.
At 3 p.m., enjoy a screening of FRIDA with a special Q&A by performers from El Paso Opera. Salma Hayek produced and stars in the 2002 biopic of Frida Kahlo, who channeled her pain into art. Hayek ages some 30 years onscreen as she charts Kahlo’s life from feisty schoolgirl to Diego Rivera protégée to world-renowned artist in her own right. Frida details Kahlo’s affluent upbringing in Mexico City, and her nurturing relationship with her traditional mother (Patricia Reyes Spindola) and philosophical father (Roger Rees).
Tickets are available at drafthouse.com.
After the movie, head back to the lobby to join in the Frida lookalike contest at 5:45 p.m. All ages are welcome to participate. Adults can enter the contest to win two tickets to El Paso Opera’s performance of “Frida.” Alamo Drafthouse will also have prizes for kids who enter the contest.
