The El Paso Chihuahuas struck out 12 Salt Lake batters and did not allow any earned runs in their 5-1 win over the Bees Saturday night at Southwest University Park. Frank Garces, Daniel Moskos, Derek Eitel and Buddy Baumann combined to hold Salt Lake to only four hits, with none going for extra bases, in the win.
Two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum started for Salt Lake and pitched six innings, surrendering one run on seven hits.
The Chihuahuas scored first when Carlos Asuaje hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third to bring in Manuel Margot, who stole both second base and third base earlier in the inning.
With the score tied 1-1, El Paso burst ahead 3-1 in the seventh with runs coming in on Jose Rondon’s RBI single and an errant intentional walk pitch by Salt Lake with a Chihuahuas’ runner at third.
Diego Goris hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to add to the Chihuahuas’ lead. The Chihuahuas magic number to clinch the Southern Division is 11 with 16 regular season games remaining. Garces has now thrown 12 consecutive scoreless innings at home.
