The El Paso Chihuahuas held Iowa to only one run for the second time in the last three games and beat the Cubs 9-1Wednesday afternoon. El Paso has won two of the first three games on its current road trip.
James Loney began the top of the second inning with a contested single to center field, which was originally ruled a catch. Ryan Schimpf, the next batter, hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to give El Paso a 2-0 lead. It was the first time in the series the Chihuahuas scored the first run of a game.
Leading 2-1 in the fifth, the Chihuahuas brought in four runs on a sacrifice fly by Alex Dickerson, an RBI single by Loney and a two-run double by Schimpf. The rally was assisted by a two-out error by the I-Cubs, which led to three unearned runs.
Loney’s three-run double in the ninth inning put the game out of reach. Dickerson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and extended his hitting streak to 23 games, which is tied for the longest hitting streak in Minor League Baseball this season.
