The New Orleans Baby Cakes beat the El Paso Chihuahuas 6-5 in Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader at The Shrine on Airline, but the Dogs came back in extra innings in Game 2 to win 6-4.
El Paso third baseman Ryan Schimpf went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs in the loss, his third multi-home run game in 45 games with the Chihuahuas this season. Schimpf had one multi-home run game for El Paso in 2016 as well.
In the second game, the Chihuahuas were held hitless by veteran Tom Koehler through five innings Friday before scoring four times on five hits in the top of the sixth. The runs came in on Collin Cowgill’s two-out grand slam, El Paso’s second grand slam of the season.
New Orleans tied it late and forced extra innings in the doubleheader game that was scheduled to run seven innings. Chihuahuas second baseman Peter Van Gansen struck a two-run single with two outs in the top of the eighth to put El Paso ahead.
The first two New Orleans batters reached in the bottom of the eighth but Carter Capps left them on in his second save of the season.
Game 2 started at 10:44 pm Central Time and lasted until 1:35 am.
The Chihuahuas are 4-4 in doubleheader games this season.
