Chihuahuas Top Cats 6-5; Dickerson’s Hit Streak Stops at 29 Games

A Sacramento River Cats’ error gave the El Paso Chihuahuas a 6-5 walk-off win Wednesday night at Southwest University Park. It was the Chihuahuas’ third consecutive win and their eighth victory in their last 10 games.

Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Jabari Blash hit an RBI single to get El Paso within one. Blash went 4-for-4 with a walk on Wednesday. Jose Pirela hit a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and then Chihuahuas’ reliever Jose Dominguez left a lead off double on base in the top of the ninth to preserve the tie score.

The Chihuahuas put runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth when Rocky Gale hit a ground ball to shortstop Hak-Ju Lee, who stepped on second base for the inning’s second out and threw the ball to first baseman Grant Green trying for a double play.

Green reached up but the ball popped out of his glove. Hunter Renfroe raced home and scored the winning run without a play at the plate as the ball rolled toward the first base dugout.

Alex Dickerson went 0-for-5 Wednesday, ending his 29-game hitting streak, which tied Boston’s Jackie Bradley Jr. for the longest hitting streak in professional baseball this season.
