Chihuahuas Unveil “The Sandlot” Jersey and Theme Night

The Chihuahuas will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the cult baseball movie “The Sandlot” on Saturday, June 2nd when they take on the Sacramento River Cats (San Francisco Giants affiliate).

“The Sandlot” is a coming of age story about a group of neighborhood kids who come together to play baseball on a sandlot. Released in 1993, the movie became a cult classic for its childhood nostalgic tone.

As part of the festivities, the Chihuahuas will wear a special jersey depicting a tug-of-war between El Paso’s favorite mascot, Chico, and the characters from the movie. The jersey will be auctioned off with the net proceeds benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of El Paso.

The movie gave fans quotable lines such as “L7 Weenie” and “Heroes get remembered but legends never die” and also “You’re killing me Smalls!”

To add to the night, Tom Guiry, who played the main character, Scotty Smalls, will make his first Minor League Baseball appearance of the season at the game. Guiry will throw out a first pitch, meet with fans and sign autographs on the concourse during the game.

The evening of fun will conclude with a Fireworks Spectacular presented by KVIA and KISS FM, and will be choreographed to the soundtrack from “The Sandlot.”

Fans are encouraged to throw on their favorite t-shirt, jeans and PF Flyers and come dressed as their favorite character from “The Sandlot.” The best dressed fan will win an erector set and contest details will be revealed at a later date.

Chihuahuas’ officials add “Don’t be a L7 Weenie…” Fans are encouraged to get their tickets now via the Durango and Santa Fe Box Offices, online or by calling (915) 533-BASE.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Southwest University Park.
