City: Adjustments to Streetcar service hours start next Monday

On Monday, city officials announced adjustments to the El Paso Streetcar service hours starting next week as part of summer programming, which invites residents and visitors to explore downtown and uptown by taking a ride on these historic vehicles.

“We want to modify our schedule to be aligned with summer activities to enable riders to experience everything the streetcar route has to offer, particularly in the downtown area,” Sun Metro Director Jay Banasiak said.

The updated service hours will allow the streetcars to start later in the day to accommodate late evening events and activities along the 4.8 mile-route.

The updated service will go into effect Monday, April 15, 2019.

The streetcar offers 27 stops connecting Downtown El Paso to Glory Road Transit Center. The route features two loops that interconnect an international bridge, an array of museums and restaurants, the baseball park, historic neighborhoods, and the University of Texas at El Paso among many other prominent locations.

  1. Mueller's gone but the party is just starting!

We rode on one of the streetcars this past Saturday during the Downtown Hotel tour! and from my own observation and opinion. It was a dream realization come true for me, it was 9 years ago and I was still living in San Francisco on this day.I would walk up hill two blocks to Market Street from my apartment on Dolores Street, cross the medium and catch the electric streetcar to downtown. Those San Francisco streetcars would bring back old memories of El Paso’s old streetcars during back in the late 1950’s and 1960’s.
God! how I wished that maybe someday the City of El Paso would bring back the streetcars, and behold.
As soon as I moved back to El Paso and within a couple of years later in 2012,there were preliminary talks to bring back our electric streetcars.
Now the downtown hotel tour only gave us the streetcar downtown loop tour which took about 23 minutes. So with this being said, we will return again to ride on the uptown UTEP Glory Road streetcar service and do the downtown loop again.
El Paso’s streetcars are way better than San Francisco’s MUNI streetcars! they are state of the art, very clean and very modern and the service was great. KUDOS TO SUN METRO! BRAVO ZULU! outstanding…
