Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Dee Margo and County Judge Ruben Vogt, alongside members of the El Paso State Delegation announced the development of a joint City-County Paso del Norte Complete Count Committee in advance of the 2020 Census.
“The challenges we face in El Paso are unique, and a grassroots effort led by members of the community will result in a more comprehensive count that will benefit our region, especially those who are most vulnerable,” said Mayor Dee Margo.
The Paso del Norte Complete Count Committee will be made up of local leaders and trusted voices in the community to make sure everyone is counted via a grassroots effort.
“More than ever it’s important that we be unified and I’m excited to see our region partnering to ensure a fair and accurate 2020 Census. Not only does an accurate count provide data on our population, but it ensures our community receives its fair share of state/federal funding, how best to distribute that funding and the number of elected representatives for our community. El Paso County is doing everything possible to reach hard to count areas and populations while ensuring the members of our community feel confident in their ability to be counted,” Judge Vogt said.
The Complete Count Committee is supported by the 2020 Census Action Team and will act as trusted Census ambassadors, identifying the Census goals for our community.
In November 2018, the City of El Paso and El Paso County signed a joint resolution establishing the 2020 Census Action Team, which is made up of representatives of the City, County, El Paso State Delegation and two at-large community leaders. The purpose of the Action Team is to support the Complete Count Committee.
The Complete Count Committee will include trusted voices from a variety of sectors – city, county, business leaders, school districts, nonprofit agencies and community members.
The expectation of the committee is to provide a diverse representation of leaders with influential reach within their respective communities. This approach ensures that the Complete Count Committee has the greatest impact in obtaining a count from every person in our region.
The Complete Count Committee will be announcing future steps as the start of the 2020 Census nears; including launch of a website, outreach events and activities, and general information from the Census Bureau regarding important dates and steps in the process.
All community members, nonprofit groups, businesses and public agencies are welcome to participate on the Complete Count Committee.
A Census training session will be hosted at 2 p.m. Friday, December 7, at the El Paso Main Library Auditorium. The event is open to the public.
