City to Host Open House for Mexican American Cultural Center Project Thursday

Officials with the City of El Paso are inviting the public to view preliminary ideas and concepts for the Mexican American Culture Center (MACC).

Via a news release, city officials shared, “The meeting will also afford the public another opportunity to provide input to help shape the project’s development.”

In October 2017, Council directed staff to explore alternative sites for the MACC within the Downtown Arts District that would complement existing cultural assets and foster collaborative partnerships.

Since then, staff has explored a variety of sites within and adjacent to the Downtown Arts District, using the preferred amenities and programming needs previously articulated by the MACC Subcommittee to Council.

These proposed preferred amenities and programming include:

  • Spaces for galleries
  • Classrooms
  • A teaching kitchen
  • An auditorium and black box theater
  • Site located within close proximity of public transportation and other cultural institutions

The MACC is one of three signature projects overwhelming approved by voters as part of the 2012 Quality of Life Bond.

  • So I guess that the city is going back to the Abraham Chavez Theater which is not a bad idea, should have stuck with it from the start. The last time the city was short by about $30 million dollars for the Mexican American Culture Center as the QOL bond issue of 2012 didn’t ask taxpayers for a reasonable amount.
But the city should keep moving forward with this culture center as they kept fighting for the downtown arena. Seems that it’s all scheduled as a GO! three court hurdles won by the city in favor of the downtown arena. Children’s Museum construction work starts in 2019 and now we need money for the cultural center.
Ask Paul Foster for a loan or something……

    • I don’t think its moving back to the Abraham Chavez, if you read the article, it states that they were looking for alternative options. I think this meeting is to present the alternative options. I think they just used that pic in the article cause thats the pic they had on file.

      • You are correct, Larry. That is the only photo we have of the proposed center. Hopefully, we’ll see some new renderings.
