City to open two Temporary Shelters for the Homeless amid COVID-19 emergency

The City of El Paso has authorized the use of two City facilities to function as temporary housing shelters to assist the homeless population while complying with the Health Authority’s social distancing rules.

The centers will be operated by the Opportunity Center for the Homeless with support from the City of El Paso, the Office of Emergency Management and numerous non-profit and private sector partners.

Primary partners supporting the work include the Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, El Paso Coalition for the Homeless, Endeavors, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger, and the Paso Del Norte Community Foundation and the United Way.

“As we continue tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in our region, we are taking actions to provide assistance to our most vulnerable community members in need,” said Assistant Fire Chief Jorge Rodriguez, the City and County Emergency Management Coordinator. “We are taking all the necessary measures to ensure the safety of our residents and help flatten the curve.”

The two facilities are:

Delta Welcome Center at the Hilos De Plata Senior Center   |   4451 Delta Drive

Delta Haven at the Chalio Acosta Sports Center   |   4321 Delta Drive

The Delta Haven is currently accommodating approximately 80 people. The Delta Welcome Center, which is located near but separate from the Delta Haven facility, will be activated on Friday, April 17, and serve as the primary intake facility for all homeless individuals during this crisis. This approach allows for appropriate screening, isolation and safety of this very vulnerable population.

Residents are reminded that the Stay Home, Work Safe Order is in effect until further notice. COVID-19 signs and symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath. If these symptoms don’t improve they should contact their healthcare provider or seek medical attention.

The 21-COVID hotline is available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For referral to services contact 2-1-1 and select option six (6). For more information, visit www.epstrong.org.
