City, County Unemployment Rates Mixed for September

Officials with Workforce Solutions Borderplex released the Labor Market Review (LMR) for October 2016, showing mixed numbers in jobs for the city and region.

In September 2016, the unemployment rate for the city of El Paso was at 4.9% which signified a 0.1% decrease from the previous month.

The unemployment rate for the city of El Paso increased by 0.2 % since last year. The unemployment rate for the city of El Paso was the same as the unemployment rate for the state of Texas (4.9%); but higher than the National unemployment rate (4.8%).

The rate for El Paso County in September 2016 was 5.3%, which was higher than the unemployment rate for the state of Texas (4.9%), and higher than United States (4.8%).

Additionally, the El Paso Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) unemployment rate was 0.4 points higher than the unemployment rate for the city of El Paso.

Total non-farm employment for the El Paso MSA in September 2016 was 311,600. This reflected an increase of 0.9% since the previous month.

The total non-farm employment for the El Paso MSA increased by 2.6% from a year ago (September 2015).  The state of Texas non-farm employment for the month of September 2016 indicated an increase of 0.3% since the previous month as well as an increase of 1.7% since last year.

The three Super Sectors with the greatest employment for the El Paso MSA in September 2016 were Government, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and Educational and Health Services.

These three Super Sectors represented 59% of the total non-farm employment.
