On Thursday, officials with The Coach Archie Duran Memorial Foundation (CADMF) announced the launch of its scholarship for 2020-2021.
“We’re holding a virtual 5K event this year to meet the new norms we are currently experiencing as a community. We are excited to honor my brother’s life and legacy by creating more scholarship opportunities for El Paso area students” said Alex Duran, Coach Duran’s brother.
The Coach Archie Durán Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization created and established in 2018 to celebrate and honor beloved coach, father, brother, son and husband Archie Durán, who died in a bus accident bringing his Irvin High girls track team home from a track meet in Lubbock.
Duran’s family set up the Coach Archie Duran Memorial Fund to provide scholarships for the students that Duran cared so much about and to provide funds for teachers to purchase school supplies.
Their main fundraiser event is the annual 5K Run & Walk, this year’s virtual run/walk is set for April 4th.
The scholarship program is aimed at students who want to continue with their education at a college or university level, and is open to El Paso area high school seniors. CADMF will award up to $1,000 in scholarships to four students this year.
Since 2018, CADMF has awarded a total of $5,000 to 5 students from El Paso Independent School District. However, this year the foundation opened the application to all school districts, distributing one $1,000 scholarship to a student from Irvin High School and the other three to the remaining high schools in the El Paso area.
The foundation works year-round hosting community events to fundraise money to provide the scholarships, and this is the fourth year scholarships have been awarded. Officials add that they plan to add an extra scholarship every year.
To apply, students can go to the Paso del Norte page or ask their school counselors about the CADM Scholarship application.
Application deadline is March 31, 2021.
