File: Chihuahuas pitchers struck out 12 in the loss, and Tuesday’s game was the shortest of the season for El Paso.
Both teams hit a home run in the third inning Tuesday and those homers accounted for all of the scoring in the Iowa Cubs’ 2-1 win over the El Paso Chihuahuas.
It was the first matchup of the season between the two teams.
With two outs and two strikes in the top of the third, Mark Zagunis knocked a two-run home run to right field. Chihuahuas pitcher Christian Bethancourt hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third, his first longball of the season.
It was the first homer by a Chihuahuas pitcher since July 2, 2016, when Edwin Jackson went deep against Reno.
Neither side scored before or after the third inning. The Chihuahuas had a bullpen day after the promotion of scheduled starting pitcher Kyle Lloyd. Rafael De Paula threw a scoreless outing on the day he was activated from the disabled list. Logan Bawcom and Adam Cimber followed him with scoreless relief appearances also, with Bawcom striking out five in three innings.
