TNTM: Dark Knight III: Master Race to add 9th issue

There just doesn’t seem to be enough Batman out there nowadays.  Every time you turn around Batman is popping up somewhere else.  He evens makes an appearance in the Suicide Squad movie. (Bruce Wayne is also in the after credits sequence so stay to the end).

Frank Miller wrote The Dark Knight Returns. It is a 1986 four-issue comic book miniseries starring Batman. It tells an alternative story of Bruce Wayne, who at 55 years old returns from retirement to fight crime. He faces opposition from the Gotham City police force and the United States government. The story introduces Carrie Kelley as the new Robin and ends up with a confrontation against Superman.

The Dark Knight III: Master Race (DKIII) is a sequel to Miller’s 1986 Batman miniseries The Dark Knight Returns and the 2001 miniseries The Dark Knight Strikes Again.  It is the continuing story of an aged Bruce Wayne resuming his identity as a crime-fighter aided by his sidekick Carrie Kelley (Robin). DKIII features an ensemble of DC Universe characters.  In DKIII, Ray Palmer restores the inhabitants of Kandor to full-size.  They immediately begin to terrorize the Earth. Batman sets out to assemble his former allies against the invaders.

Miller and Azzarello figured out eight issues just wasn’t enough to adequately tell the story.  DC announced the limited series “Dark Knight III: The Master Race” has expanded from eight issues to nine. “Once you dive into the Dark Knight mythology, it’s hard to pull yourself out,” said Miller. “Those characters cannot be contained and neither can we.” Azzarello added that “this story turned out to be bigger than the both of us.”

The third in a series of “Dark Knight” stories from creator Frank Miller, “The Master Race” was originally slated to conclude in March 2017 with “Dark Knight III” #8. The new ninth issue is scheduled to arrive in Spring 2017. The next issue, “Dark Knight III: The Master Race” #6, will arrive in stores on October 19.
