Video: DC Comics Shazam! Upcoming movie

Shazam has a very interesting history. The character has changed hands a few times and has been the target of more than one lawsuit. Shazam was one of the most popular characters in comics in his early years.

There were several comic titles, TV shows, and animated features. The Shazam movie is scheduled for 2019 release as part of the DC Extended Universe. The movie will star Zachary Levi and Asher Angel portraying the title role.

Shazam, also known as Captain Marvel is a character published by DC Comics. Artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker created the character in 1939. Captain Marvel first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 published by Fawcett Comics. Shazam is the alter ego of Billy Batson.

When Billy speaks the magic word “SHAZAM” (acronym of six “immortal elders”: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury), can transform himself into a costumed adult with the powers of superhuman strength, speed, flight, and other abilities.

Fawcett ceased publishing Captain Marvel comics in 1953, partly because of a copyright infringement suit from DC Comics. The lawsuit alleged Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman.

In 1972, DC licensed the Marvel Family characters from Fawcett. DC attempted to integrate Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family into their DC Universe with mixed success due to trademark conflicts over another character named “Captain Marvel” owned by Marvel Comics.

DC Comics published and branded the character’s adventures using the title Shazam!. This led many to assume that “Shazam” was the character’s name. DC Comics officially renamed the character “Shazam” when relaunching its comic book properties in 2011.

DC Comics is hoping to return Shazam to his former prominence with the 2019 movie release. We have our fingers crossed the film makes Billy Batson/Shazam a new fan favorite.
