Doom Patrol S1E15

Video+Story: TNTM’s kinda-spoilery review Doom Patrol | Ezekiel Patrol | Episode 15

Well, we finally made it to the end of Doom Patrol season 1. There were a lot of ups and downs and way too much Cyborg. Overall, we were underwhelmed by this first season.

By now you should know we are not fans of having Cyborg appear in this series. It always felt kinda forced. There is no real comic book history to support his being there either. It’s like they were trying to leverage his name to boost the show. It didn’t work for us. Hopefully someone will make an edit of the season that contains NO Cyborg.

We were really hooked with the first few episodes. The story was shaping up like a typical reluctant superhero show. Then somewhere in the middle of the season it went off the rails. They lost focus on saving the Chief. A lot of the episodes were just Chief’s freaky friend of the week. Maybe 15 episodes were too much. They could have edited the whole thing down to 10 episodes and it would have been better.

Episode 14 gave us hope. Finally Mr Nobody broke the fourth wall again and agreed with us that there was a lot of character driven drivel and not much in the way of them looking for Chief. He even ripped Cyborg’s face off the Doom Patrol poster. Yes! we felt vindicated. They even put another Animal Mineral Vegetable Man reference in the episode.

That turned out to be false hope though. Episode 15, the final episode, was a bit lackluster. The Doom Patrol has tracked Mr Nobody and the Chief to the white space. The white space is the border area of the comics where there is no content. Rita figures out the true power in the white space is being able to narrate the story.

Mr Nobody may have bitten off more than he can chew in this episode. Ezekiel (cockroach) and Admiral Whiskers (rat) are towering all powerful monsters on Danny Street. Mr Nobody has to work with the Doom Patrol to escape. They all finally escape, but they seem to be tiny and it looks like Danny the Street has become Danny the Brick.

We believe Doom Patrol has some great characters. The story just seemed to ramble along on no certain path. Some of the episodes could be removed completely and have no effect on the plot. They could definitely take Cyborg out completely. Episode 14 would have been a much better season ender. DCU will be hard pressed to entice us into watching season 2.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.
