Delfosse Ties For Third to Lift UTEP to Top-5 Finish at HBU Husky Invitational

UTEP women’s golf posted the second lowest score of all teams in the final round on Tuesday to secure fourth at the HBU Husky Invitational, marking the best finish of the season for the squad.

The Miners compiled a 926 (305, 315, 306) to place just a stroke behind USC Upstate for third and five strokes behind South Dakota for second.

After residing in a tie for 15th heading into the final round, Sophie Delfosse stormed up the leaderboard for UTEP over the final 18 as one of just two individuals to score under par in the third round. Her 2-under par 70 helped her climb all the way into a tie for third with Leah Alberto of Sam Houston State at 8-over par. Delfosse scored a 224 (75, 79, 70) over the two days.

Delfosse started out strong on Tuesday, tallying a birdie on three of the first five holes she played to spark her quick ascent up towards the top of the leaderboard. She sat in a four-way tie for first entering her 17th hole before eventually wrapping up the event in a tie for third.

The strong individual performance gives Delfosse her second top-10 finish of the season and the third of her career. She has now been the top finisher for the Miners in six of the eight tournaments on the campaign.

As a team, the Miners had four of their five participants place in the top-25. Tijana Jovicevic Kovacic posted a 234 (79, 79, 76) and Andrea Ostos a 234 (74, 77, 83) to tie for 22nd. Additionally, Marta Romeu Chen tied for 25th with a 235 (77, 81, 77).

Ella Hammond-Baveystock (248) concluded in a tie for 58th as the fifth participant for UTEP.

A total of 14 teams and 75 individuals took part in the tournament, which featured 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday at the Riverbend Country Club.
