Department of Public Health to Host Community Events to Commemorate World AIDS Day

The City of El Paso Department of Public Health will commemorate World AIDS Day with two community events on December 1.

The HIV Prevention Program will offer free confidential HIV testing from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the HIV Prevention Program located at 701 Montana.

The HIV Prevention program will also host a free short film festival, “One Community, Una Comunidad,” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Foundation Room located at 333 North Oregon Street. The film festival will showcase local artists and feature works that highlight HIV stigma, living with HIV, support for those living with HIV, and celebrate the lives of those lost to HIV/AIDS.

World AIDS Day reminds the public and the government that HIV and AIDS are still a global issue. Just last year, nearly 87,000 people were known to be living with HIV in Texas and an estimated 39,500 people were diagnosed with HIV infection in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in seven individuals living with HIV do not know their status.

The CDC estimates that some 50,000 Americans are newly infected with HIV every year.

According to the CDC, of the 1.1 million people living with HIV in the U.S., more than 24 percent are women. Among all the women diagnosed with HIV in 2014, an estimated 62 percent were African-American, 18 percent were white, and 16 percent were Hispanic/Latina.
