DMD approves grant funds for mural depicting Texas Flag

Thursday morning, the Downtown Management District (DMD) Board of Directors approved grant funds for a large mural set to cover the entire side of a downtown parking garage.

The mural, by El Paso artist, Jesus “Cimi” Alvarado will depict the Texas flag as if draped over the side of the building. Estimated start time for the artwork is March 2020

Diversified Parking Inc., was approved for $3,581 in mural grant funds on a 1:1 match – the estimated total project cost is $7,162.00. .

The Downtown Mural Grant Program provides funding to existing business and/or property owners to establish or restore murals within the DMD boundaries.

All proposed mural projects are reviewed by a panel of local art professionals to evaluate the quality, suitability, and appropriateness of the proposed mural, and make a recommendation to the Grant Review Committee. Applicants can apply for up to $10,000 in reimbursement funding and must be matched by a private investment dollar.

The Downtown Mural Grant Program is one of four downtown grant programs offered by the DMD, such as Iconic Signage and Lighting Program, Pedestrian Corridor Improvement Grant Program, and the Commercial Façade Improvement Program.
