Video+Info: TNTM’s Doom Patrol Episode 1 on DC Universe kinda spoiler-free review

Doom Patrol has been around since the 1960’s yet they aren’t part of the mainstream DC Universe of characters. Their line-up has changed over the years with Robotman (Cliff Steele) being the only character in every iteration.

They are a group of super-powered misfits whose “gifts” caused them alienation and trauma. They were given the moniker of the “World’s Strangest Heroes” and they wore the mantle well. At the end of their original series run they were all killed off. But as you know, no one stays dead in the comics… except Uncle Ben.

When they announced that Doom Patrol would be one of the new exclusive series for DC Universe I was a bit skeptical. This is a team of unsung and sparsely used characters from DC’s line-up. Then I saw the early pictures of what Robotman looked like and I moved from skepticism to outright disbelief that the show would work.

Nevertheless, I gave the first episode a chance because I desperately wanted to see some new DC characters break into the mainstream. After finishing the first episode I decided to binge-marathon the whole series. I was disappointed when I discovered that DC Universe was releasing the episodes one each week rather than all at once like Netflix. Oh, the unfairness of it all.

DC Universe has a potential hit on their hands with Doom Patrol. The voice acting of Brendan Fraser was much better than I expected. He gave emotion to a non-moving robot face. Alan Tudyk was… well, he was Alan Tudyk. I really enjoy watching him bring characters to life. You might also recognize an old James Bond actor in Doom Patrol. Timothy Dalton plays the man who brings them all together, the Chief.

If you haven’t seen the first episode of Doom Patrol yet, you should. The first episode does a lot of character introduction and it still keeps you wanting to see more. If the rest of the season is just as good, I will be renewing my DC Universe membership.

Do you agree with us that Doom Patrol is gonna be a hit for DC Universe? Or do you think we’ve lost our mind saying it is good? Let us know in the comments.
