BOCA RATON, FL. – Junior Lily Downs logged a second-place showing, and the UTEP women’s golf team finished third at the FAU Fall Invitational on Tuesday in Florida.
Downs fired a nine-under-par 135 with rounds of 66 and 69 in the 36-hole tournament. She landed two strokes back of Seminole State’s Worapitcha Anndit, the individual champion with 133 (67-66).
Downs fired the first sub-70 rounds of her college career, breaking her previous low 18-hole tally of 71 at this level. She tied for the tournament lead with 11 birdies.
The Miners posted rounds of 280 and 294 for a total of 574. Seminole State was tournament champ (277-289-566), followed by host Florida Atlantic in second place (282-290-572). UTEP has finished in the top-five at all four fall tournaments. The Miners have also shot under 300 in four of their last five rounds this season.
“I’m proud of the team and Lily,” UTEP coach Jere Pelletier said. “This is the best team score that UTEP has ever had.”
Rounding out the scoring for UTEP were Abbie Anghelescu in 11th place (69-75-144), June Ting tied for 15th place (72-75-147) and Audrey Haddad tied for 18th place (73-75-148). Valeria Mendizabal tied for 24th place (74-78-152). Anghelescu’s 69 in round one was also a collegiate best.
UTEP will complete its fall schedule by participating in the Little Rock Classic Oct. 29-31 in Little Rock, Ar.
