El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame set to celebrate Class of 2021 with banquet

Officials with the El Paso Sports Commission announced that the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2021 Banquet will be held next month, and tickets to the event are going fast.

This year’s event is set for Wednesday, August 25th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel, located at 1770 Airway Boulevard.

The Class of 2021 Inductees in the Living Athlete Category are John S. Birkelbach, Joe Overton and Jim Weddell.

In the Coach/Administrator Category inductees are Maria Kennedy and Erwin A. Bloxdorf followed by Felix Chavez in the Media Category. Victor Firth will be inducted in the Officials Category and Charlie Brown in the Posthumous Category.

Ed Stansbury, President of the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame said, “We are looking forward to another great Hall Class this year at the Radisson.”

Honored as well at the banquet will be the 40th anniversary of the very first El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame Student Athletes of the Year in 1981.

Honorees will be District 2-5A Rosa Sosa of Bel Air High School an All City Basketball Player and great athlete in Volleyball and Track and Field and Eddie Cadena an outstanding quarterback at Riverside High School.

In District 1-5A the athletes selected were Patsy Norman of El Paso High School, a two time State Cross Country Champion and a State Champion in the 1600 Meter Run. The other selection was Kurt Powell of Irvin High School who played basketball, football and won the State High Jump Championship his senior year.

Individual tickets are $35, or a reserved table for 10 for $350 can be purchased by contacting Wayne Thornton at (915) 373-6708. Tickets are also available online at www.elpasoathletichalloffame.com.

The deadline for ticket purchases is August 16th if tickets still remain.
