El Paso County Historical Society to Host Five Points Walking Tour

The Five Points area has been an integral part of El Paso since the mid-1910’s; and like many Sun City neighborhoods, it has had its ups and downs.

On May 12, the El Paso County Historical Society will share the story of this unique area, one of El Paso’s first suburban districts, as it makes a resurgence.

In less than two hours on Saturday, May 12, board member Jon Eckberg will lead a tour of Five Points, hoping to spark fond memories of favorite restaurants and childhood hangouts while also sharing new information about the old neighborhood.

“We’re trying to give more than just, ‘this building was constructed in 1948 by Leon Gillespie,’ ” Eckberg said. “We’re going to tell you who Mr. Gillespie was, who Mr. Gunning was, who Mrs. Price was. We want to bring their stories to life.”

Highlights of the tour will include the former Sears department store which anchored the shopping district for decades, Price’s Creameries, and iconic restaurants including Gillespie’s Steakhouse, the Italian Kitchen and Ashley’s Mexican Food. The tour will also focus on innovations and firsts of this historic area of El Paso and shine a light on new businesses which are bringing new life to the area.

“As a resident of nearby Manhattan Heights, I have a love for this area, and I hope to convey that,” Eckberg said. “I’ve found stories that are going to make you love some of the old denizens of Five Points, as well as some that will make you go ‘hmmm …’ “

The tour is a fundraiser to support the El Paso County Historical Society’s efforts to preserve and promote our local history.
